How fit do cops actually need to be?

A lot of people don't realize what it takes to become a cop. Just getting an interview is based solely on passing a written exam on most occasions. However, in order to get the job, potential recruits have to pass a basic physical fitness exam.

In Massachusetts, there are many different types of fitness tests that departments offer. Some departments make up their own, others use tests that were developed in other states. Connecticut uses a program called CHIP or Complete Health and Injury Prevention. Obtaining a CHIP card is required by all departments in Connecticut, but the standards are fairly universal across the country.

The CHIP test includes four different sections: flex, sit-ups, bench press and a 1.5 mile run. The flexibility test is done with the applicant sitting on the ground with his legs straight out in front against a box with a ruler. The applicant then reaches straight out with both hands as far as possible. Sit-ups are full sit-ups done bent legged with the feet held. Hands are kept behind the ears. The bench press is done depending on the applicant's weight, and the run can either be walked or ran within a certain amount of time.

Passing scores are based on an applicant's sex, age, and whether a department requires applicants to pass in the 40th or 50th percentile. Since most applicants are between the age of 20 and 30, I figure that will be a good place to start.

Ages 20-29:
Flex
Male
40%: 16.5 inches
50%: 17.5 inches

Female
40%: 19.3 inches
50%: 20.0 inches

Sit-ups
Male
40%: 38 in 1 minute
50%: 40 in 1 minute

Female
40%: 32 in 1 minute
50%: 35 in 1 minute

Bench Press
Male
40%: 99% of body weight
50%: 106% of body weight

Female
40%: 59% of body weight
50%: 65% of body weight

1.5 mile run
Male
40%: 12:25
50%: 11:49

Female
40%: 14:49
50%: 14:08

And these are just the basic requirements to even be considered for a job!!

  1. I always wondered, once cops have passed the physical part in order to become certified, do they need to repass the test every so often or is it a one time thing? I see a lot of fit young cops but as they age I have seen a lot of the stereotypical body type ones. Reflecting on myself, I don't even think I could pass these standards at this point but I'm sure they go through rigorous training prior to taking this test. In not many other professions are there physical requirements to get hired, so I give props to those who want to be cops!
